The Visitation

I woke startled. Confused. Someone was knocking on my front door. The bedside clock indicated it was the darkest hour before the dawn. I fumbled about trying hurriedly to slip on jeans and a tee-shirt.

Three more knocks.

They didn’t sound desperate, a rushed banging. Just three sharp, insistent raps.

Somewhat dazed, I rushed to the entry and opened the door. Nothing.

The thin veneer of fresh snow on steps and landing bore no footprints. All was quiet.

It would be an understatement to say I was perplexed as I closed the door and wandered back to bed.

I couldn’t shake the vague unease all day (this happened yesterday).

Très bizarre! I'm tempted to try to offer some possible reasonable explanations, but the mystery of it is much more interesting.

"Interesting" wasn't the word that sprang to my mind. More like "unsettling."

Got any woodpeckers in your area? Perhaps one was hammering on your house and discovered it wouldn't yield anything edible??

Then again, perhaps it was a dream...

Intriguing. I wonder what it all meant? I like to see you there at your door, accepting the knocks as real, ready to meet whatever/whoever it was.

We don't have all that many woodpeckers in my 'hood. And what few we have aren't nocturnal.

I kept asking myself if I was dreaming. Didn't feel like it. I stumbled from naked to clothed. Opened the door to cold and ice. Left my bare footprints in the snow. Felt the freeze. Clambered back to bed but couldn't sleep. Passed an entire day confused (well, OK, that part ain't unusual).

I've never been one to not open my door, Erin.

I've dreamed I've heard the doorbell, gotten up to answer to find nobody there.

Perhaps a dream? What do you need to welcome into your life right now? To open the door to?

It could have been worse. A clown could have been standing there.....

meh... houses expand and contract and wood rubbing together often sounds like footsteps or "knocking"...

What you experienced was yer complicated brain playin' simple tricks...

Once upon a midnight dreary
while I pondered weak and weary
over many quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore...

while I pondered gently napping,
suddenly there came a tapping
as of someone gently rapping
rapping at my chamber door

'tis the wind and nothing more...

(something like that...)

What do I need to open my door to, Lilith? Don't rightfully know.

Nothin' worse than flinging open a door only to find a derelict clown. Been there. Done that.

Hah! Believe me, June, that Shakespeare quote crossed my mind a time or two yesterday.

It could have been an LSD flashback, Scott. It was what it was...whatever it was.

Believe it or not, Bella, I actually considered the possibility that I would receive word of a dear soul's passing that day (I got a story 'bout just that type of surreal event).

Didn't happen.

(Hope you find my music recommendations pleasing)

Hi Jonas, Snowqueen here.

That would freak me out.

Sorry I have not visited for a LONG time. New computer in June and never transferred my old favourites.

And, as usual, forgot my log-in details. Despite my efforts, I cannot sustain a blog, so after long breaks, I forget all the passwords etc.

Your Highness!!! Wow!!! It's been so long since I heard from you! Where in the world are you? (In your case, the question is literal). Are you in England, Australia, Poland, Korea, elsewhere? Do tell.

I gotta say, having you reappear kinda made my day. Tell me: Are you happy?

Thank YOU for the kind words, forgetmenow. Thanks for dropping by.

Hypnopompic hallucination!?! Gawd, I loves me a woman who flings terms like that about!

To answer your question: maybe. Can't rule it out, although I've never experienced anything quite like this before.

Now, hypnagogic hallucinations are something else again. Had me a bunch o' those.

Dear Jonas,

I am still in South Korea, and avoiding North Korean missiles....pesky northern neighbours. Actually, I have incredible compassion for the North Korean people, just not the gov't.

I am reasonably happy, but still searching. Not sure what for though!
